CRYOGENICS

about

In her music, Austrian violinist, vocalist and soundartist Mia Zabelka deals with acoustic interaction between the body and its surrounding environment, with special focus on the “sound gesture”. The sound gesture is the notion of how sound moves and how it moves the body at the same time – the embodiment of sound, an intuitive body-sound-machine linkage. “The sound gesture is a paradigm for a hedonistic, stimulus-based physical experience of virtualities, and as such it represents an artistic research approach for a body language for the exchange between the human body and its environment.” (Werner Jauk).
Mia Zabelka scrutinizes this form of interface technique with her sound art and explore it with a view to its potential for application in communication between humans and autonomous machines; the coexistence of man and machine in converged environments is entrusted to hearing.
Mia Zabelka is very interested in the interdisciplinarity between music and science. The term “scientific music” best applies to her work. She combines musical intuition and scientific logic to complement each other’s perspectives. Music and science become “entangled”. “Scientific music” is music beyond melodies, harmonies and rhythm. Scientific music is concerned with making atomic sounds and automatic, mechanical processes audible. It is noise, movement, automation, division, symbiosis, dissonance and resonance. An endless adventure of futuristic sound discovery.

Arun Natarajan, founder of Subcontinental and Guitarist / Bassist / Electronic musician under the moniker ICOSTECH complements Mia Zabelka’s performance with electronic sounds, Guitars, Bass, Noise and Ambiance.

Follow up to the critically acclaimed "Aftershock" Album, the duo return with another long form piece, this time rooted in dark ambient, techno sound space. Mia Zabelka carefully caresses through passages with her trademark violin sound/noise, while ICOSTECH tops it off with his guitar, bass work and mix.

The four movements of space travel as interpreted by ICOSTECH

movement 2 : Stasis
movement 3 : Stammer
movement 4 : Shangri-La

Cryogenics is the production and behavior of materials at very low temperatures. At this temperature the actions of all molecules stop, causing the molecules to be at the lowest possible state of energy. Quantum computers must ideally operate under a high vacuum and ultra-stable mechanical and thermal environments to prevent the excitation of the qubit state; cryogenic conditions are required because thermal energy can excite vibrational motion that could disturb quantum computing operations. The use of quantum computing noises is central to Mia Zabelka’s sound world. She also uses microsounds, tiny sound particles at limits of audibility, that provide a situational fabric, a vibrational context within which violin and voice sound events unfold. In collaboration with scientists from MIT-Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Mia Zabelka explores the sound of atoms in cryogenic environments. This project of scientific music is an exploration in time, space, thought and perception.
