"Austrian electric violinist Mia Zabelka studied classical violin and composition in her Vienna hometown. Zabelka belongs to a handful of avantgarde violin pioneers pushing the boundaries of their instrument into the realms of electroacoustic music. For her first LP, Somateme, published 1987 by Edition RZ, she teamed with Giselher Smekal on tape and sound treatment, plus Robert Bilek as guest saxophonist.

♫ Subtitled Körperklänge, or body sounds, Somateme is an electroacoustic suite for electrified violin, sound processing, tape and musique concrète sounds from contact microphones. The imposing opener Aura starts with heartbeats, like in a famous Eliane Radigue piece, before delicate violin arpeggios slowly build into a dense intra-psychic mindscape where the violin explores the surrealist environment build around her by Smekal’s tape and sound processing. Track #2 Brücken pairs Smekal’s synthesizer sounds with Bilek’s saxophone, in addition to Zabelka’s violin excursions, for a track which is close to European Improvisation. #5 Sandstrahlentrost includes fireworks sounds on slow motion, electronic drone and violin at the treshhold of dream. Here again, the violin acts as a seismograph of Zabelka’s inner psyche and her music deploys itself with originality, free from contemporary and classical musicians’ clichés."

Dringt man allmählich nach mehrmaligem, intensivem Hören in Mia Zabelka musikalischen Kosmos ein, überrascht einen mit welcher Konsequenz Künstlichkeit und Natürlichkeit bewusst miteinander konfrontiert werden, einander durchdringen, überlagern, auflösen und wieder neu erschaffen, in all ihrer widersprüchlichen Unmittelbarkeit Abbild und Ausdruck der sich stetig verändernden, weil reagierenden Verhaltensweisen der beiden Musiker.

Musik vom Tonband, mehr oder weniger bearbeitete Klänge, Künstlichkeit also, steht einer Musik gegenüber, die vom Körper ausgeht, sich über diesen in Form von Improvisation manifestiert - nicht zu vergessen, die Mittel der Live-Elektronik und der Klangregie - Natürlichkeit also, doch lassen sich diese Abgrenzungen nicht so ohne weiteres aufrechterhalten, vielmehr möchte Mia Zabelka 'Spuren verwischen, miteinander verschmelzen, Klänge aus ihrer gewohnten Umgebung herausreißen und in eine neue bringen.'

...Ist man als Hörer bereit, sich dieser Musik auszuliefern, dringt man mit dem Körper tief in diese Klänge ein ohne sie jetzt begreifen oder analytisch erfassen zu wollen, so erfährt man eine Form von Intimität, die, über das Persönliche weit hinausreichend, ihre (und unsere) Nacktheit furchtlos zur Schau stellt und uns in einen kindlich-unschuldigen Zustand des schöpferischen Aktes (zurück-)versetzt, in einen Zustand, der eine Herausforderung darstellt, sensibler und subtiler auf die eigene, nicht nur musikalische Umwelt zu reagieren."
